Happy Mother's Day Weekend!

I would like to thank all the Mothers for attending our wonderful Mother's Day Tea today. We loved singing to you as well as sharing the morning spending time with you. Thank you again for coming!
Tomorrow the students will be coming home with a special Mother's Day Gift. I have asked the children to hide the special gift until Mother's Day (if they can!) to surprise their mom's.

Gift From God
Today the books will come home. Students are asked to finish PG 5 and compete PG 6 with their parents. Again I would like to remind parents to NOT go further into the book and complete extra pages. The pages correspond to specific lessons that we need to compete in class prior to the workbook activity. Thank you for your co-operation.

Word Books and Home Reading
I would like to remind you that both the Word Books and Home Reading Packages must be returned tomorrow.

Field trip Notices
I am still waiting for a few more field trip notices to be returned to me in order to have a final count as well as look at how many volunteers I have for the day.

Coming Up Next Week:
Words of the Week in Word Book : Monday
Insect drawing and exploration continued

Have a Wonderful Mother's Day Weekend and may everyone be blessed with special moments with their loved ones.

The Sun is Here!

The sun is here! This week we have been blessed with  wonderful sunny weather. Although the sunny weather is great I would like to remind all parents to please pack hats and sunscreen for outdoor recesses. Along with the protective outdoor gear you  can also pack some extra snacks for your child or cold drinks. As the students are spending more time outside for recess and PE they are becoming quite hungry at recess and lunch! Thanks!
If you have any questions or concerns please email me.

This week:
Word Books:
Today we had our first spelling test using the words from our "AB" Word Family List.
Everyone did awesome! Monday we will be learning a new word family so be sure to check your child's blue folder for new words in their Word Book. You do not have to re-write the words in the book, however you can practice writing them on spare paper at home. The book is only set home in order for parents to learn the words with their child and practice them at home.

Gift From God
This weekend there is no Gift From God homework, however please remember to ONLY complete the assigned pages for the evening when the book has been brought home by your child. Usually it is only 1 page. If you are unsure please check the blog or email me with questions.

Mother's Day Tea

Word Families:

We have begun studying word families this week. On Monday's we will be brainstorming words and practice writing them. Also on Mondays the students will bring home a Word Study book to which they will have 5 words in it. These 5 words are to be practiced at home daily so your child can spell the word and read it.
On Friday's I ask you to please return the books as we will have a spelling test with the 5 words. The spelling test is to help students learn how to spell words on their own as well as introduce them to new vocabulary.
We have discussed a test is a way for teachers to see what students remember. There is no pressure to master the words for the test, but only that they begin to understand how a test is taken and how to participate appropriately.

Please ensure you practice this with your child daily :)

Gift From God Books

Just as a reminder please only complete the assigned pages in the Gift from God book as it goes along with the lesson competed that day.

Happy Holy Week!

Happy Holy Week from Kindergarten!

This week I sent home your child's Station of the Cross booklet. We have been discussing the Stations of the Cross for the past few weeks in preparation for Easter.
On Holy Thursday we viewed a presentation by the Grade 7's on the Stations of the Cross. This re-enactment helps us to remember what Easter is all about.
I have explained to the students how the Grade 7's performed the Stations of the Cross and how it is only acting. This portrayal of the stations can be quite powerful and evoke emotions in the children. All students enjoyed the presentation by the Grade 7's and showed their best behavior. Way to go Kindergartens!

We also celebrated Holy Thursday with Primary stations. We visited grades K-3 in small groups and participated in activities to remind us how important Lent and Easter are.

Bunny Grass Heads!
We have created bunny's and grown grass to explore how plants grow. Encourage your child to explain to you how seeds grow as this is also part of our current Earth Day theme in class right now.

We have finished the Alphabet!
Yippee we have finally finished the Alphabet! This means next Friday we will be having an alphabet party complete with a treasure hunt , activities and snacks. If you would like to help with some of the prep activities for this day please see Mrs. Lemire asap! :)

Reminders:
There is NO SCHOOL Friday April 18th and Monday April 21st. Have a Happy Easter weekend!

Home Reading

Home Reading

On Friday new books were sent home with your child in their Home Reading Package. As this reading program is new for many students and parents here are a few reminders:
- Books are to be brought back Friday. If books happen to be brought back later (Monday), I will do my best to assess them and change books as soon as possible that day.
- The books are going to be slightly easier right now. This is to build confidence in your child's ability to read and motivate them. As I send books home they will be progressively be getting more challenging.
- On the recording sheet you only need to write the book down once. This record is so I nknwo which book they have read and how challenging it was for them. You do not need to record the book every time they read.
- There may be alphabet books in the package as well which are there for your child to recognize words to pictures. Do not test them on reading the word by covering the picture as the words can be tricky for many; this can be done only if they are ready and would like an extra challenge. We do many picture walks with stories in class so they are guided to use pictures when words are difficult. This is part of the reading process. another idea to use with the picture books is to ask your child what letters make the sounds in the words (ex: HORSE --> which letter makes the 'r' sound). You can even ask your child to use the word in a sentence or even spell it with looking at it (or not !).

If you have any questions in regards to the Home Reading please come and see me :)
